Enormous head, broad chest, voluminous Arctic fur. Presence of an "ancestral wolf" — the largest canine you've ever seen, but still biologically believable.

Transformation:

Time: 30 seconds to 1 minute (feels like an eternity).
Pain: Bones breaking and rearranging, muscles tearing and rebuilding, skin stretching. The first time is the worst.
During transformation, there is a window of vulnerability.
At the end, a freedom that makes the pain worth it.
